Quantity vs. Quality in Sports Gambling - A Simple Example

We’ve all heard a handicapper or sports gambler boast of their ability to win at a 60% or better clip. Is it possible to win at that percentage over a short period of time? Absolutely. If someone is able to maintain that winning percentage over the course of years - enjoy your riches, and I wish you all the luck in the world. Now the truth. It’s not going to happen - forget it, 60% is nearly impossible over any substantial length of time. 55%, maybe, but anyone who claims a 60% win rate over multiple sports and seasons is simply lying - or they are betting a very small number of games. Don’t give up yet however. Below I will show that winning 54 out of every 100 games (54%) can turn a nice profit.

The example below will examine the attainable profits from different amounts a games wagered and different winning percentages of those games. For the sake of argument
someone could claim that they have hit 60% winners betting on sports the past three years, for example. But if they only bet 10 games a year - 30 total over the three year span - and they win 18 of those, I guess they have the right to claim they can handicap sports at a 60% win rate. Technically correct, but a very weak claim.

Wager size $110

Betting $110 to win $100

60% winning percentage over 30 games

18 winners = $1800

12 losers = $1320

Profit = $480

For someone who claims to pick 60% winners over the past three years, and is betting roughly $100 a game - a $480 profit does not look all that impressive. So much for that impressive 60% winning percentage.

Let us now look at a different example. A guy claims that he has hit a conservative 54% of his games over the past 3 years (52.38% is the break even point). However, over the course of that time he bets roughly 3 games per day on all major sports. His total games bet would be 3285 over that time span. Let’s examine his numbers using the same bet size as the so called 60% bettor.

Wager size $110

Betting $110 to win $100

54% winning percentage over 3285 games

1774 winners = $177400

1511 losers = $166210

Profit = $11,190

You can see from these simple examples that it is important to not only look at winning percentages, but also the number of games wagered and the bet size to realistically analyze potential profits. Be sure to take this into account when analyzing your bets, or when you hear outrageous claims of 60% or better winning percentage over a long period of time.

I am writing for advice on a personal dilemma of the most personal nature. I am male, mid-40s, married 20 years.

After all these years, I still long to make love to my wife two or three times per week, while she seems to prefer two or three times per year, if ever. Best I can tell, she no longer enjoys making love whatsoever and hasn’t for the last 10 years.

While all this seems dismal, the problem I am seeking advice on is more a moral issue. First, let me make sure you know that I have been faithful to my wife since the day I met her. I would never consider sex outside my marriage vows. That goes against every moral fiber of my being.

Additionally, pornographic materials and gentlemen’s clubs go against my beliefs and would only make matters worse. I will say after all these years I do understand why some men succumb to weakness and fall prey to sex outside their marriage.

Please do not tell me to have a meaningful conversation with my wife. I tried that and failed miserably. In February 2000, after years of trying to get through to her, I felt I couldn’t take it anymore. I told her I long for the intimacy only a married couple can share.

She offered no reason, except she is always tired and has too much on her plate. While I acknowledge that she shoulders plenty of responsibility with work and home, she can find the time to walk the dogs or work herself to the bone on something that can wait until tomorrow.

I pleaded with her to get whatever physical, medical, emotional or psychological help she might need to get our marriage back on track. I offered to attend any sessions she felt comfortable with me participating in.

I offered to do anything in our lovemaking that would make it more enjoyable for her. I told her I would not pressure her into making love, but would wait for her to let me know when she was ready.

For four weeks things improved as we made love three times. However, she never sought outside help and began to fall into her old comfortable habits. Over the next 17 months we made love only another six times with most coming at my insistence.

I finally gave up keeping track and gave up on her caring enough to change. Short of divorce, how do I relieve my sexual tension without compromising my beliefs and myself?

Marshall, rules make sense in context. One rule most people believe in is “Thou shalt not kill.” However, if you must kill a man to defend your wife and children, most people would say you haven’t violated the rule.

If a robber breaks into your home, collects your valuables and asks if you have anymore money, most people would say it is okay to lie. Why? Because rules only make sense in context. Otherwise the person with the lower standard always gets to win.

From society’s point of view, marriage is the best possible context for sexuality to be expressed. Marriage attaches sex to love and a caring, committed relationship, and two people are present to raise the children.

You don’t believe in divorce, yet you have contemplated adultery. Why? Because something which belongs in your marriage is not there. “Keep thee only unto him” absolutely means don’t cheat, but it does not mean “Don’t let him have it either.”

Your wife will not honestly tell you what is on her mind, and you have suggested every possible solution. As a result, you are estranged from the person you should be most closely bonded to.

It is time to apply your ideas about marriage and divorce to your current specific situation and decide what is right. Rules only make sense in context.

(You can test this yourself by checking the top listings in search engines for any keyword combination).

What does this mean for you? It means that you either a) are already rich and can purchase that land, factory, machinery, and workers immediately (website, product rights, advertisement, etc) or b) you need to start building these Internet capital goods or you are definitely going to fail within 3 months.

So how do you know what is and isn’t an Internet capital good? An Internet capital good is an item that, once you build or purchase it, will constantly add or create value for your business. This includes links, content, dynamic scripts, free tools that your targeted audience can use, and mailing lists that you can consistently offer your products to.

If you are not making an effort to build these Internet capital goods, you are the Internet equivalent of real life business that purchases frozen pizzas from the supermarket next door, heats them up in a microwave, and then tries to sell them. On top of that, your store has no napkins or condiments or tables or chairs or pizza boxes. Everyone must sit on and eat off of the floor.

Would you want to purchase pizza there? No, you would get it at the supermarket frozen at a cheaper price, or you would go next door, where they make it and then bake it in an oven, where you could sit down at a table in a chair.

Take the time to understand this point: If you want to succeed, you absolutely must either have money to buy your land, store, table, chairs, and oven–or you must build them yourself.

Fortunately for Internet marketers, you have a huge advantage over regular businesses–you can build all of these Internet capital goods; you do not need to pay for any of them.

You can build every Internet capital good I have mentioned above for no cost at all. And you will if you want to succeed on a limited budget. So setup your links. Make quotas; reach those quotas every week. Build content. Find legally reusable expert articles and add them to your website. Build pages that offer free tools to your customers. Use free advertising methods advertise this page as a useful stand-alone (which happens to be linked to your related website). Setup a free content ezine or marketing list that is related to your website. Register with free directories to get customers.

All of these Internet capital goods will not only draw customers to your business through a multitude of sources, but they will also retain customers that come to your website through free or paid advertisement by giving them the option to get free information or use free products.

As every marketing study has indicated, multiple impressions of a product increase a person’s chance of buying it–and multiple contacts with a salesperson increases the conversion rate. By retaining customers you will both increase the impression of your product and expose them to your sale copy, which will dramatically increase your conversion rates.

If you get nothing else out of this article, please remember this fact: the only way to successfully build and expand an Internet business is by building Internet capital goods and staying around until you have enough to constantly draw and retain customers. The majority of the companies offering DNA testing services provide DNA analysis and counseling for researching biological relationships. Most of these laboratories offer DNA testing kits at no charge for potential customers, in order to improvise on their database.

DNA testing, DNA typing or DNA profiling is one of promising techniques used to distinguish between individuals of the same species. The process uses samples of their DNA for identifying their genetics. In 1985, the process was publicly launched by Sir Alec Jeffreys at the University of Leicester. Genetic fingerprinting exploits highly variable repeating sequences called microsatellites in finding the differences between two human beings. The process states that two unrelated humans are likely to have different numbers of microsatellites at a given locus. By using PCR to detect the number of repeats at several loci, the process establishes a match that is unlikely to have arisen by coincidence.

DNA testing is subject to the legal code of the jurisdiction of the state where it is being undertaken. In most cases, testing is undertaken voluntary but incase of search warrant or court order, the testing is made mandatory. Several jurisdictions have now started assembling databases containing DNA information of convicts. The United Kingdom has the most extensive DNA database in the world, with over two million records by the end of 2005.

The companies offering these kits access an individual’s case to determine the type of testing best suited for him, i.e., either a personal DNA or legal DNA test. They also provide necessary materials for DNA collections, and the results are given to the person in three to five working days. Mostly, DNA reports produced by the testing are fully accredited by the law, because most of the companies comply by methods specifically drawn by the state laws.

Tips for Choosing a Chiminea for Your Patio or Backyard

Imagine that you want to stay warm in your backyard on a cool,
starry night. One of the ways you can do so is to invest in a
clay or cast iron chiminea. A chiminea is nothing more than the
modern version of a traditional Mexican outdoor fireplace. This
type of outdoor fireplace was used for hundreds of years as a
source of warmth and a place to cook. Nowadays you see them in
many backyards as sources of warmth and as accent pieces adding
charm to a patio or garden.

You can find chimineas made of clay, aluminum and cast iron.
Which one you choose depends on what style fits your patio or
backyard and how much money you are willing to invest. (Note:
There are several accepted spellings for a Mexican fireplace.
The common spellings are: chiminea, chimenea, chiminia,
chimenia.)

Choosing a Clay Chiminea

When choosing a clay chiminea, you should look to see if the
fireplace was air-dried or kiln-dried. In general, an air-dried
fireplace is usually “untreated.” This means you would need to
paint it and seal it before use. Kiln-dried versions are
typically prepainted and sealed.

Clay chimineas are constructed in two pieces. The bottom piece,
called the “bowl” is the largest piece, and looks like a
potbelly stove. The smokestack, or “neck” is attached separately
on top of the bowl. The joint where the two pieces come together
is usually rather weak, so you should never lift a clay chiminea
from the neck.

In general, clay chimineas are not designed to handle large
fires for extended periods of time. They are also more likely to
crack and break than a cast iron or aluminum model.

Finally, remember that a clay chiminea is nothing but a
combination of water and dirt. If you let it sit in water long
enough, it will turn back into mud. Therefore, cover it during
rainstorms and never let your clay fireplace sit in a pool of
water!

Cast Iron and Aluminum Chimineas

In general, a cast iron or aluminum chiminea is more durable and
sturdy than a clay version. Although they tend to be heavier
than clay models, they won’t crack or break as easily. However,
they will need occasional maintenance.

For example, if you leave a cast iron chiminea outside long
enough, it will rust. Rust is a normal occurrence, so if you
sand out the rust spots and paint them as they appear, your
fireplace should give you many years of enjoyment.

Cast aluminum models are relatively low maintenance, lighter in
weight than cast iron, and also rust-resistant. Therefore,
painting and sanding is not necessary.

What to Look for in All Chimineas

As you shop for a Mexican fireplace, pay close attention to the
size of the fire bowl area. This is where you will be placing
the wood to burn, so be sure it is large enough to accommodate
adequately large pieces of wood. The size of the fire bowl is
more important than the height of the neck.

You might also consider purchasing a spark arrestor for your
chiminea. A spark arrestor is a mesh screen that you place over
the chimney hole to prevent sparks from escaping. You might also
consider a spark arrestor for the front of the fire bowl, too.

A modern Mexican chiminea is a great addition to any backyard,
both as a source of heat and as a decorating accent piece. Make
your choice between clay, cast iron, and cast aluminum models.
With a little yearly care, you will have a wonderful
conversation piece for your patio or backyard. Plus, you will
have a romantic and charming way to stay warm as you gaze into
the sky on a cool and starry night.

Let’s put this under the heading of “things I just don’t
understand.”

What I want to know is this - why do we treat the holiday season like it’s an emergency?

I mean, it’s not like Christmas comes as a surprise every year.

Because we treat the holiday season as an emergency, we tend to forget what the season is all about: celebration!

Whether you are celebrating Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa or simply a few days off from work, the point is to celebrate.

With that notion in mind, I’ve taken the word “celebration” and come up with 11 suggestions for how to tap into the power of celebration in your life.

Cherish - Cherish your life, your loved ones, your work. My dictionary defines cherish as “to hold dear to you.” There are so many things in our lives to cherish. What might it be for you?

Enthusiasm - So many people go through each day in a trance. If you don’t believe me, just stand outside a large office building on_Monday morning, and you’ll see what I mean.

What would our lives be like if we brought the same kind of enthusiasm that we bring to a football game into all areas of our lives?

Living with Passion - “Live with passion” is the motto of motivational expert Tony Robbins. Similar to enthusiasm, living with passion means to make the most of every day, every event, every gift, every relationship.

Excitement - Have you ever noticed that many of the sensations that are part of excitement (rapid heartbeat, sweaty palms, feeling charged) are also the same sensations that go along with anxiety? How could you change your anxiety into excitement this year?

Belief - It was Jesus who said, “If you have be lief the size of a mustard seed, you can say to that mountain, move, and it shall be moved.” The power of belief allows us to move the mountains of our lives.

Rejoice - Exactly what does it mean to rejoice? My dictionary defines rejoice as “to feel or express joy or gladness, to exult.” A rejoicing soul is a happy soul: Find something to rejoice in this holiday.

Attitude and action - It’s been said that “your attitude determines your altitude.” While that may be true in part, attitude is worthless unless it’s followed by action.

Time - We are all familiar with the old saying, “Time heals all wounds.” Sorry, I don’t buy it. Time is neutral; it merely passes. It’s what we do with our time that makes the difference between mediocrity and a life well lived.

Imagination - Do you use yours? Or have you set it aside? The power of imagination is at the root of every great change and achievement.

Opportunity - When we focus on what is wrong with our lives, we tend to miss the opportunities that come our way. When we are celebrating our lives, we are focusing on what works, and then are able to see the multitude or opportunities that come our way each day.

Now: Celebrate now - Not next year, not when you are out of school, not when you get that new job or are making more money. Celebrate now. No one is promised a next year or even a tomorrow. Celebrate now.

In closing, if you used just one of these tips in this holiday season and next year, I believe you would benefit.
