Domain Registration and Website Hosting — a Personal Take

Making a decision on the best domain and finding the best suited Web registration are the first things to look at when building a website. All the same, it is nearly impossible to decide on anything without some informed help. But let’s face it, the most dependable way to guarantee that your needs are fulfilled is to carry out some thorough preparatory research.

Reviews of domain hosting are definitely helpful, but how can you determine what precisely is helpful and what isn’t? As is the case with all informed business decisions, you must determine what characteristics are most significant to you. A lot of people opt to get their Web pages hosted by the same provider they have chosen for their domain registration. Keep in mind, though, that after your website was launched, features like service are quite likely to become way more significant than ever.

Any customer review featured on the provider’s website is not enough to base a decision on. It is crucial to obtain an objective assessment prior to making a choice. Make time to research into a good number of domain hosting reviews and pay attention to the customers’ remarks. Do you find any problems over and again? What do existing customers consider regarding the company? Is the overall feedback good or bad?

Count on reading good and bad feedback for each company. It’s wise to get ahold of all reviews with an open mind and weigh them all. Without a shadow of a doubt, the importance of pricing should not be ignored, but ensure you have any services you might need included in your targeted agreement. Below are various questions to answer when trying to find the best hosting for your site. Does the company you are thinking of feature round-the clock customer support with a toll-free telephone number, can you see if they respond quickly to any complaints or inquiries? What about bandwidth? Some companies extend unlimited domain hosting and bandwidth as standard, and sometimes you may be eligible for other benefits like software packages and a variety of rebates.

How is the payment scheme implemented? Are all payments automatic, and are weekly payments accepted? In the case of a server failure, what happens? The answers to questions like these could be absolutely vital for any website. In the long run, only you are able to select the best hosting for your website, but make sure you have correctly determined all your options. Taking a look at relevant domain hosting reviews will give you the opportunity to save time and effort later on.

China Linked to Oil Industry Cyberattacks

At least three US-based oil firms have been targeted by a series of cyber attacks on their dedicated linux server that could have come from China. According to experts, this highlights a new and more sophisticated level in the global war of internet espionage.
The mere existence of the oil and gas industry breaches have been closely guarded by the companies and federal authorities but sources say that these were focused on the so-called crown jewels of the industry: the valuable ‘bid data’ which covered the value, quantity and location of several oil discoveries from all over the world.
The companies - ConocoPhillips, ExxonMobil and Marathon Oil - were unaware of the full extent of the said attacks in 2008 until the feds alerted them about them in the same year and again in 2009. Federal officials informed the companies that proprietary information has somehow been distributed including to computers located overseas.
The data released included messages, e-mail passwords and other information that are linked to executives who can access the proprietary exploration and discovery information. While the involvement of China in the said attacks has not yet been established, it was found that some data detected have been flowing from one company to a computer located in China. The security personnel of a second company has privately referred to the breaches and leaks as the ‘China virus.’
Corporate officials don’t realize that a major foreign intelligence agency has managed to take control of a significant portion of their network because nobody has told them about it, says a source who was familiar with the recent attacks. It’s difficult to get rid of the attacker because it doesn’t work as a normal virus would.

What to Move to the Cloud

If you’re an IT manager, then you’ve probably heard a whole lot about the cloud and managed hosting. And you’re probably looking into moving there if you haven’t done so already.
But what type of data should and shouldn’t be moved in the cloud anyway?
According to Mark Forman, a former E-Government and Information Technology Administrator and currently a partner with KPMG said that the Open Government Initiative by President Obama will pave the way towards making a lot of federal applications public. This manifests a changing mindset about data.
Data covering operations i.e. who gets awarded a contract under USASpending.gov, or the money that has been spent on the Recovery Act things that are considered protected data, are now required to be placed in a public sphere to promote transparency in the government. However, Forman also said that there is still FISMA and other security regulations that have to be considered when migrating to the cloud.
The cloud is still perceived to be a cowboy land. It’s difficult to tell what will happen to the data once it’s moved there. Sensitive data has to be properly protected and the cloud is going to host applications that the feds should move to. There’s also a need to protect the data while in transit.
Forman adds that data that has been designated as secure will probably never go to the cloud. It will have to be protected against certain types of threats. He said that moving data into the cloud will probably become a filter for those hackers who are out to no good.
Hackers will not really go after cloud data. They are more likely to go after information that hasn’t been moved yet because the government has already deemed that the elements of the data model sensitive.

Directories Still Used by Google as Signal of Trust

Everybody is confident with browsing the web with search engines nowadays, as they allow us to find websites so quickly. This is crucial, never the less search engine results aren’t filtered by actual people, but by an algorithm. So why would that be remarkable? Imagine you’re browsing for a pub in Milton Keynes for example. You would type these keywords into Google (for example), then a list of search results would be presented. How can one know if these results are trusted if they’ve never been vetted by a human editor? Here’s the answer: search engines utilize human-edited online directories as a basic filter.

Directories still play a substantial part on the internet, and the best directories are unavoidably edited by humans. A person may recognize that (e.g.) : “that hotel has been awarded a particular rating for cleanliness and having certain standards, that’s a really good signal”. A good directory receives many entries everyday. An official will investigate these submissions, and if the editor is content that the level of the entry is of a particular standard, it is added to the internet directory. This is why search engines still love website directories. Both dmoz.org and the Yahoo! directory are looked up by search engines as filters to discover the trustworthiness of a website - whether it’s listed in these directories or not, since they’re human-edited and have rigorous rules-for-entry.

So don’t downplay the significance of website directories now that most people use search engines to find websites. A directory with rigorous guidelines can act as an important measuring device as to how authentic a website is. If you own a website, also look to get your website added in a niche directory, like a home and garden directory, a hotel directory, or a restaurant directory.

5 Ways to Build a Website

If you are like me you have wanted to build a website but didn’t know how!

Why?

Because you haven’t learned html

Because it costs too much to have someone do it
for you.

The software you have found is too complicated

You just didn’t have the time or patience to read
the 500-page manual

There was no one to teach you how to do it.

Well let’s review those one by one.

You didn’t build a website because you haven’t learned
html.

With today’s easy to use html text editors you can build
a website as easy as typing a word document. You need to
learn very little of the html coding and what you do need
is very easy to learn if taught properly.

You didn’t build a website because it costs too much to
have someone do it for you.

Well that’s a fact! If you have someone do it for you,
you will have to pay a web designer Big Bucks to create it.
To get just what you want, optimized by keywords, with the
look and feel you desire you will spend as much time with
the designer as if you did it yourself. And then pay them
more when you need changes!

You didn’t build a website because the software is too
complicated.

Most of the software is designed with the professional in
mind. All the bells and whistles add to the complexity of
the product. Which makes you wonder where you are even
going to start. Throw in the fact that you need to master
a few other programs to support the design software and
you have a confusing tangle of programs to learn all at
once.

You didn’t build a website because you just didn’t have
the time or patience to read the 500 page manual.

Not to mention that you have to read the manual more than
once to understand things, so you can learn by trail and
error. And are you ever sure you did it the right way? Was
there a shortcut you didn’t know about? Are there other
programs you can use to make it easier and faster to get
a website up.

You didn’t build a website because there was no one to
teach you how to do it.

A tutor or html training course is a great way to
learn how to build websites. Preferably if you can get
one-on-one tutoring.The problem is one-on-one tutoring
is very expensive.

Many group courses are taught when it’s convenient for
the teacher not the student. After the class is done
there is no on going tutoring or ability to ask questions
when you run into problems.

So what’s the answer?

Learn on line with an html video tutorial series.
An html video tutorial that teaches you step by step at
your own pace how to build a website. You can rewind a
section and play it over again if you don’t understand it.

And what if this tutorial product includes all the
software you will need FREE. Along with the live video
tutoring on how to use all of it.

You can build a website as you go through it. When you
have completed the video tutorial you will have a built
a working website. I mean a WORKING web site.
Done! Finished! Completed!

There was no one to teach you how to do it

You are now ready to work on that all important marketing
of your website. As you learn how to market your site,
making the necessary changes are a snap for you! Because
you were able to build a website. And now you can edit
it yourself.

Give yourself some credit. It’s a lot more rewarding when
you do it yourself. And, if you are like me you don’t have
the money to waste trying a lot of different things.

Linkihg - This is it!

Linking - This Is It ! Well I find it time to speak again about
linking as I have a couple of times in the past two years. I
think I have gone the cycle and I think I have arrived. What do
we want linking to do for us and what can linking actually do
for us? Well we want it to get us traffic. Most of us think it
can get us traffic two ways. One way we hope to get traffic is
by making the search engines think we are good because of all
the links to us. We are hoping that will rank us higher in those
search engines. All the SEO companies want to help us be on the
FIRST PAGE of Google. Well with the billions of websites now and
all the keywords maxed out - can we all be on the first or
second page? Of course not! So, how much does it really matter
where you rank in Google? Let me give you an example provided by
David Notestine from Zeus link management programming. He will
provide server logs to back up stats that show: - they get
6000000 hits per month for Zeus - about 20 of those hits are
from search engines - about 3 percent result from paid adwords
(not profitable he says) - the remainder are from hits from
links on other websites What should we really expect from our
linking strategy. Let’s get hits from links on other sites.
Forget that other stuff about pleasing the Google Gods! So why
don’t we all help each other with good linking practices? If you
are going to link to me so that others can find my site, why in
the hell don’t you make it easy for those visitors to go from
your home page to your link index? WHERE IS THE DAM Text to
click on for links? If I can’t find it to verify my link, then I
know damn well that your site visitors won’t find it or even
look for it if it’s that hard to find. As you can see, this
really irks me. Secondly, for your link site to be useful to me,
visitors need to find me or my product in that huge directory
that we all are trying to develop. The best way to make it easy
for searchers to find a link to a website or product is with a
“search utility” installed and kept current on the page of that
big link directory. Visitors can then search for a product, name
or contact and get easy and immediate results. The difference we
see here is that a few little things like this will make linking
work the way it should for ALL of us and not for just ten or
twenty websites!
